Frequently Asked Questions

Is Roleplaying Like Dungeons and Dragons Beneficial

Roleplaying games are more than just an escape; they provide a powerful platform for enhancing mental health and social skills. By stepping into the shoes of a character, players engage in problem-solving, cultivate empathy, and practice communication in a dynamic setting. This interactive environment encourages collaboration, helping participants forge meaningful connections and reduce feelings of isolation. As players navigate challenges together, they learn valuable life lessons about resilience, cooperation, and self-expression, ultimately fostering a supportive community that champions personal growth and emotional well-being.

But Christians Have Historically Opposed D&D, right?

Yes, certain Christian denominations have historically viewed D&D as potentially harmful or malevolent, primarily due to specific elements present in particular RPG settings and the depiction of magic. For those who might feel uncomfortable with these themes, Monte provides a more relatable option with the Lord of the Rings campaign setting.

Are RPGs Just for Kids and How Can Adults Join In?

Roleplaying games offer a vibrant tapestry of imagination and camaraderie that extends far beyond childhood, inviting adults to engage in meaningful experiences that can rejuvenate their mental well-being. By stepping into diverse characters and fantastical worlds, players can unlock new perspectives on their own lives, fostering self-discovery and collaboration in a safe and supportive environment. These immersive narratives not only provide an escape but also encourage personal growth, resilience, and enhanced social skills, enabling players to confront real-life challenges with newfound confidence and creativity. As adults gather around the table, they cultivate friendships and forge connections that transcend the ordinary, demonstrating that the joy of roleplaying knows no age limit and remains a powerful tool for nurturing emotional health and a sense of belonging in today's fast-paced world.

Requirements for Getting Started

That depends on you and your group; if you are a random group of peers, Monte will give you direct access to his collection of rules on D&D Beyond, a free platform for creating characters, though there may be minor bugs in the Lord of the Rings setting. This platform allows him to track dice rolls during the game, and he can set up a Zoom session for remote play. Families can invite Monte to their home or choose another location like the local Once Upon a Sandwich restaurant in Cortez. We provide the pencil and blank paper and can print your character sheet from D&D Beyond. We offer the rulesets for the D&D settings we use, and if you want a different ruleset, please email us for availability. If possible, bring a pad or phone with the D&D Beyond app for your dice rolls, which can be done in person. We might also use a digital map from D&D Beyond, so having a laptop is a great option.

How long is a session?

Monte's standard sessions last two hours, which includes approximately 1.5 hours of gaming followed by 20 to 30 minutes dedicated to individual or group follow-up. He suggests one-on-one counseling for any serious mental distress that may arise during sessions, and he is able to accommodate longer sessions based on individual time commitments.

What About Other RPGs?

If you have your own RPG suitable for a family or private peer group session, Monte will review the rules and make an effort to accommodate it, though this is not guaranteed.

What Other Games Could Be Added?

Great question. Although these options are not yet available, the accrediting company is exploring additional geek therapy models that Monte is considering, such as video games, movies, and books. Stay tuned for updates.

Where Would This Be Done?

Monte's office is a bit small, but the gaming can be done there. He is also looking into other community places in Cortez. A family group can invite him into their home. Stay tuned.

When Will This Be Available?

Monte finishes certification at the end of May, 2025. Reserve your spot now.
